The Importance of English Language Skills in Saskatchewan

Learning to speak and understand English is one of the most important things you can do to settle in Saskatchewan.  Although many Saskatchewan people speak different languages at home, English is the language used in Saskatchewan schools, workplaces and the broader community.

Good English language and communication skills will help you find work, develop new friendships and adjust to life in the Saskatchewan city or town you have chosen as your new home.

What if I do not know what my English language level is?

If you are a permanent resident already living in Saskatchewan, visit one of the Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) centres in Saskatchewan.  These centres will test your language level and direct you to the appropriate language training program.

If you are already living in Saskatchewan but you are not a permanent resident, visit your local immigrant serving organization or regional college and they can explain your options.

If you are not yet living in Saskatchewan, you will need to look for ways to have your English skills tested in your own country.

Visit the "Learner Gateway" on the Centre for Canadian Language Benchmarks website to understand the way we describe language levels in Canada.

Where can I take English classes once I arrive in Saskatchewan?

If you are living in one of the four major cities in Saskatchewan (Saskatoon, Regina, Moose Jaw or Prince Albert), contact your local immigrant serving organization.

If you are living in a rural area, contact your local regional college.

English language classes and programs serve different groups of immigrants.  You will need to learn which classes you are eligible to take and which ones will best help you develop the English skills you need.

What can I do before I arrive?

Once you live in Saskatchewan, you will have many options for improving your English language skills.  If English is not your first language, you may want to learn English before you come to Saskatchewan.

There are websites that can help you measure your language skills, improve your language skills and decide what kind of language training you may need.

Have your English skills tested and learn as much English as you can before you leave your home country.
