Many newcomers ask about the winter and winter clothing.  Here are some hints to help you stay warm and enjoy the winter season:

  • Enjoy the many winter sports and activities Canada is known for, such as skiing, skating and sledding.
  • Listen to the television and radio, read the newspaper or check the internet for information on the daily temperature and forecast.
  • Wear warm clothing outdoors during the winter months, especially if the weather is cold and windy.

Follow these suggestions for staying safe and warm in winter weather:

  • Wear a light shirt and long underwear under sweaters and pants.
  • Winter coats (often called "parkas") should have a hood and warm lining, and be waterproof and windproof. They should be loose fitting to trap body heat while ensuring air circulation.
  • Wear a hat because most body heat is lost through your head. Winter hats (we call them "toques") should cover your ears.
  • Choose winter boots that have a warm inner lining and thick soles with a rough surface to prevent slipping on ice.
  • Wear mittens or gloves (mittens are usually warmer than gloves).
  • In extremely cold weather, wear a scarf that covers your mouth to protect your lungs.

In extremely cold weather do not leave any skin uncovered as it will freeze in a very short time.  Exposing skin in freezing temperatures could cause frostbite.
